Seven Foot Disorders/Pathologies and How To Manage Them!


Foot pathologies or disorders are a nuisance to a large population in any given country. Even though there are medical and surgical treatments, the real question is if there’s any other way out?

Can a person who has a common foot pathology find a middle way out?

Luckily, there is a management plan that does help with stopping the pathology from progressing. Even if it does not entirely cure the diseases, it will help you alleviate your symptoms. If you have recently developed foot problems or want to stop your condition from becoming worse, this blog is for you.

Here are a number of things you can do to prevent the worst-case scenario.

1.  Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon is the largest in the body , that connects muscles in the calf to the heel bone. Many people develop Achilles tendonitis because of the excessive use of the tendon. It is more apt to say that runners are more prone to this pathology. It frequently happens to runners who run for more extended periods than their usual routine.

However, the primary way to manage it is to stop your vigorous workout and rest on the tendon. You can then try an ice pack to subside the inflammation or use compression bandages to minimize the tendon’s movement.

2.  Posterior Tibial Tendonitis

The posterior tibial tendon is the actual tendon that maintains your arch. It is in close relation with the Achilles tendon. One can cause damage to this tendon when overusing the lower limbs. The symptoms may include difficulty in walking because of a flat foot arch in the tendon attachment area.

The best way to heal the tendon is to immobilize it so it can rest. You should avoid walking unnecessarily or even moving your foot. Even though the definite treatment is medication or surgery, you can still wear supporting shoes that support your arch. Or, you can also add soles to keep your feet comfortable.

3.  Calf Pain/Tight Calves

Exercise is an incredible way to strengthen your bones and muscles. However, if you overwork your bones and muscles, there are high chances one may not exercise because of the injuries. Like, overusing our body because we need to lose weight in a limited period is not wise. How a machine would stop functioning if you keep using it without letting it rest, our calves can become tight and cause pain.

Hence, if you are doing intensive exercises or running for several miles without sufficient rest, you are prone to developing tight calves. The best way to avoid this is to take proper rest before continuing with your routine. You can also practice some calf stretching exercises that will help strengthen your calf and alleviate the pain.

4.  Supination

Supination occurs when the foot loses its normal angle and rolls on the outside, or the lateral part of the foot, distorting the standard curve. It primarily happens because of a lousy shoe that does not efficiently support the anatomy of the foot.

Hence, the primary thing to do is get shoes that provide maximum support to your ankle and help keep it in place. Footwear can help maintain the normal alignment of the feet, which is why it becomes extremely crucial to get shoes specifically designed to prevent supination.

5.  Overpronation

Overpronation is the opposite of supination, where the ankle rolls inward. It occurs because of ill-fitting footwear or a too rigid shoe and is made of uncomfortable material. So, if you fear that you can have an overpronated foot, then it is the best time to change your shoe into something more comfortable.

Consider getting shoes that have excellent cushioning and ample space in the toe box. Moreover, you can also use shoe inserts for a much softer feel. Several brands now manufacture shoes according to foot problems. Hence it is advised that you buy appropriate shoes for yourself.

6.  Knee Pain

Knee pain is the most problematic lower limb pathology that most people present within a doctor’s office. It is a pathology of older people, yet many young adults can have knee pain due to trauma or tear in the ligaments supporting the knee joint.

Knee pain can last for long. You can only stop it from worsening with conservative management like exercises that strengthen the joint. You should avoid sitting on the ground or unnecessarily climbing stairs. However, walking is an excellent way of improving knee pain, if it is not very debilitating.

7.  Sciatica

The sciatic nerve runs from the hip to the foot. Sciatica is a term used to describe the sciatic nerve’s irritation that causes severe pain along the course of the nerve. It would prevent you from walking on your toes, getting up from a squatting position, or raising your leg while lying down.

Usually, sciatica occurs in either of the legs. It is less common to have sciatica in both legs at the same time. Physical therapy is a beautiful way of preventing sciatic flares in the future. Or you may also use cold packs in the region that causes pain to reduce your symptoms. Nonetheless, you can also prevent positions that aggravate your pain. For instance, you can avoid squatting or lifting heavy objects against gravity. Remember to maintain a good posture while sitting or lying down.

Foot pathologies are somewhat manageable if you know when and how to take care of yourself. You need to identify what aggravates your condition and prevent it from happening again.
